What does 'local web design' mean in today's web-enabled world?

Posted on: 05/02/2010

The internet has opened up countless new opportunities for businesses over the last ten years. Thanks to the global power of the Web, even small companies are able to tap into markets that were once far beyond their reach. Many services, including web design and development, still benefit from in-person consultations – but e-commerce has allowed agencies to easily advertise their services a little further afield.

Most people agree that this is a good thing, for both businesses and customers. Quality companies have more opportunities to succeed, while consumers have much more choice.

Which is why we at James Burfield Consultancy were a little surprised to receive a dig via Twitter recently from a web design firm based in Andover, regarding the promotion of our services in the town. It’s something I’d like to respond to and explain.

Andover is one of over 40 towns near to our base in Midsomer Norton, near Bath –all of which we provide web and graphic design services to. Thanks to Google and our team’s SEO expertise, we successfully advertise to people searching for ‘Web design Malmesbury’, ‘Web design Marlborough’ or ‘Web design Andover’ – despite the fact that we’re based in Bath. (We help our clients get brilliant search results on Google in exactly the same way.)

Does it matter to our clients that we aren’t based in their town? No it doesn’t, because we’re close enough to them to provide the same personalised service we give to our customers in Bath. Our five-strong team enables me to get out and see clients on a daily basis. Bath to Exeter is a 90 minute drive. Bristol is 30 minutes away, while Andover is a 45 minute trip. We are not only able to provide specialist services to businesses in the towns we advertise to (we only advertise in the South West), we are able to visit them daily for meetings if required.
What about keeping business local? We say, if there’s a great design firm round the corner from your business premises then it makes sense to use them. If not, we’re here to help.

So what prompted the web design firm in Andover to have a go at us via Twitter? Well, I’m sure your guess is as good as mine!

If you would like to know more about the web design, web development and graphic design services that James Burfield Consultancy provides throughout the South West, we’d love to hear from you.
